Upper GI Surgeon: Andrew Kennedy

Andrew Kennedy has always had a major interest in laparoscopic and upper GI surgery. Towards the end of his training he was fortunate to spend a year as an Upper GI Fellow in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia . There he gained enormous experience in modern oesophagogastric and laparoscopic surgery working for Prof Glynn Jamieson and Prof David Watson.

Since appointment as a consultant surgeon in 2000, he has sought to translate the experience gained in Adelaide to the practice of upper GI surgery in Northern Ireland.

These areas include the application of laparoscopic techniques to anti reflux surgery in the treatment of gastro oesophageal reflux disease, the surgical treatment of achalasia, laparoscopic bile duct exploration, laparoscopic management of oesophagogastric cancer, laparoscopic incisional hernia repair and bariatric (obesity) surgery.

Andrew is the Irish representative on the council of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. He has also been able to extend his research profile.
