Hernias frequently develop through previous wounds in the abdominal wall or around the umbilicus. Frequently these defects can be repaired using laparoscopic or “key hole” surgery. Using this technique, mesh is placed behind the hernia enabling a sound repair while avoiding a large incision and extensive dissection required at “open” surgery. Smaller hernias can be fixed as a day case, larger hernias require 1-2 nights in hospital |

Inguinal hernias are one of the most common type of hernia, particularly in men. Most “first time” inguinal hernias can be fixed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure, minimizing pain and disruption. Mesh is used to reinforce the weakness with recurrence rates of less than 5%. Most normal activities can be recommenced in one week |
